Bernese Mountain Dog Vet in San Jose — ARCH Veterinary
Bernese Mountain Dogs are gentle giants with one of the shortest average lifespans of any breed — making proactive, knowledgeable veterinary care essential. ARCH Veterinary in San Jose offers cancer-focused wellness screening, orthopedic care, and the surgical capability (including emergency bloat surgery) that giant breeds require.
Cancer is the biggest risk
Roughly half of Bernese Mountain Dogs develop cancer in their lifetime, most often histiocytic sarcoma, lymphoma, mast cell tumors, or osteosarcoma. We recommend twice-yearly exams from age 4, full annual bloodwork from age 3, and prompt biopsy of any new lump.
Orthopedic and joint disease
Hip and elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament tears, and arthritis are common. Weight control is critical — even a few extra pounds dramatically accelerates joint disease. OFA screening is recommended for breeding dogs.
Bloat (GDV)
Giant breeds are at high risk for gastric dilatation-volvulus, a life-threatening emergency. We strongly recommend prophylactic gastropexy at the time of spay or neuter, and we perform emergency GDV surgery with same-day CT and surgery.
Heart screening
Subaortic stenosis and other heart conditions can occur. We recommend cardiac auscultation at every visit and echocardiogram screening for breeding dogs or any dog with a heart murmur.
Lifespan and care priorities
Average lifespan is sadly only 7–10 years. Proactive cancer screening, weight management, joint support, gastropexy, and prompt investigation of any lethargy, lameness, or lump are the most important things you can do.

Frequently asked questions
What's the lifespan of a Bernese Mountain Dog?
Sadly only 7–10 years on average, mostly due to high cancer rates.
Should I get a prophylactic gastropexy?
Yes — strongly recommended for giant breeds at the time of spay or neuter. It prevents life-threatening GDV.
When should cancer screening start?
Annual bloodwork from age 3, twice-yearly exams from age 4, and prompt biopsy of any new lump or persistent lameness.
Are Berners good in heat?
Poorly — their thick double coat makes them prone to overheating. Limit summer exercise to early morning or evening and provide cool resting areas.
