Not All Coughs Are Kennel Cough

Owners often assume any honking cough is kennel cough. While it's the most common cause, several serious conditions can mimic it — including heart disease, pneumonia, collapsing trachea, and even heartworm. Knowing the differences helps you decide whether to wait it out or get to the vet immediately.

Kennel Cough (Infectious Tracheobronchitis)

Classic signs: dry, honking cough that sounds like a goose, often ending with a gag or 'spit-up' (white foam — not vomiting). Triggered by exposure to other dogs (boarding, daycare, dog parks). Highly contagious but usually self-limiting in 1–2 weeks. Most healthy adult dogs recover with rest. Puppies, seniors, and brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds need vet evaluation as they can develop pneumonia.

Collapsing Trachea (Small Breeds)

A honking cough triggered by excitement, pulling on a leash, or pressure on the throat — common in Yorkies, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, and other small breeds. The cough is chronic and worsens with weight gain or hot weather. Treatment includes weight loss, harness instead of collar, cough suppressants, and in severe cases surgical stenting. Heart Disease — A Hidden Danger

A soft, persistent cough — especially at night, after lying down, or with exercise — can signal heart disease, particularly in small breeds (Cavaliers, Dachshunds) and large breeds (Dobermans, Boxers). An enlarged heart presses on the airway, triggering coughing. Other signs: faster breathing at rest, exercise intolerance, fainting episodes. ARCH can diagnose with a physical exam, chest X-rays, and echocardiogram referral.

Pneumonia, Heartworm & Other Serious Causes

Wet, productive cough with fever, lethargy, or rapid breathing suggests pneumonia — get to a vet same-day. Heartworm disease causes coughing in middle to late stages and is preventable with monthly medication. Foreign body inhalation (grass awns, foxtails) causes sudden coughing fits. Lung tumors in older dogs cause progressive coughing with weight loss.

When to See a Vet — Same Day or ER

Same-day vet visit needed if: cough lasts more than 7–10 days, dog is lethargic or off food, breathing is faster than 30 breaths/min at rest, gums look pale or bluish, or coughing up blood.
