Understanding the difference between emergency, urgent, and routine care helps you make the right call — and could save your pet's life. Emergency Care — Come In Immediately

True emergencies are life-threatening situations where every minute counts. These include difficulty breathing or choking, uncontrolled bleeding, seizures lasting more than 3 minutes, suspected poisoning (chocolate, xylitol, rat poison, lilies), bloated or distended abdomen (possible GDV), inability to urinate (especially male cats), loss of consciousness or collapse, trauma (hit by car, fall from height), and severe allergic reactions with facial swelling. If you see any of these signs, don't wait — drive directly to ARCH's Winchester location, open until 10 PM daily.

Urgent Care — Same-Day Visit Recommended

Urgent situations aren't immediately life-threatening but shouldn't wait more than 24 hours. These include vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours, limping or sudden lameness, eye injuries or sudden squinting, minor lacerations or bite wounds, ear infections causing severe pain, urinary accidents in a housetrained pet, refusal to eat for more than a day, and mild allergic reactions (hives, itching). ARCH accepts walk-ins for urgent care at both our Winchester and Santa Teresa locations — no appointment needed.

Routine Care — Schedule an Appointment

Routine issues can safely wait for a scheduled appointment within the next few days to weeks. These include annual wellness exams and vaccinations, mild intermittent itching, gradual weight changes, dental tartar buildup (no pain), skin lumps that haven't changed, routine lab work or refills, nail trims and ear cleaning, and microchipping.
